The spray, an undulating mix of hot and cold mineral water, is pleasantly disorienting to be in. Or perhaps that was a partial effect of the day hike around Lake Sabrina at over 9000 feet. In any case, the mineral pool was a fantastic finish to the day. And the vintage character of the place, while slowly decaying, was very cool. I hope any sprucing up that might happen doesn’t go too far.

Enjoy Weed

In the final moments of our time around Mt Shasta, I managed to get my group to wait for me while I wandered around Weed, CA shooting the local color. Actually, it didn’t take very long. But it was fun while it lasted.

With subjects like these, it was definitely about color. I was shooting with a polarizing filter, which I have little experience with, and I’m surprised by the deep, dark blues that resulted. Click an image to view large.

x-pro Eclipse

We scrambled at the last minute to try to get somewhere to see the eclipse. We ended up at the local park with a bunch for friends and neighbors with everything from telescopes to layers of dark glass. This was shot by holding the camera in one hand and a couple of layers of welder’s glass in front of my lens with the other. A kind of like the lo-fi cross-process look that came out.

New Street Light

New Street Light

Albany CA. 2010

I just noticed tonight that the street light right outside our house is different. It is is very white, almost blue light, and almost looks like LED. Then I noticed that several, but not all, of the street lights in the neighborhood have been replaced. It is easy to tell, because the contrast with the old yellowish sodium lights is striking.

I thought a web search was in order to see if this was part of something significant. Sure enough, I found the following information in this PDF:

The City will be replacing all “cobra head” street lights in Albany from High‐pressure sodium vapor (HPSV) to LED. Approximately $400,000 in Federal Stimulus Funds (ARRA funds) for energy efficiency will be utilized for this project. This project has many “green” benefits including:

  • CO2 reduction: 170,042 Kg/year
  • Energy savings: 324,506 kWh/year
  • First Year Cost savings: $28,374

They will be replacing over 600 of the old sodium lights. There’s also a lot said about improved visibility. It definitely seems much brighter out there. I hope it is not too much, since our bedroom window faces the street. On the other hand, I do like the quality of light much better than those terrible orangey sodium-vapor lights. It’ll make mundane neighborhood night photography much more fun.
